2013 Tournament Details
14th Annual Dick Clegg – Howie Stein Golf Tournament
It was a threatening day at the Easton Country Club for the 14th Annual Dick Clegg – Howie Stein Golf Tournament, held on Monday, July 29th, 2013, sponsored by the Boston Park League. Their were rain showers in and around the area, but once again, it didn’t rain on the golf course, as 70 golfers teed off at 9:30 am. In fact with the temps in the 70’s, it was ideal playing conditions. The course was in great shape, and we extend our compliments to Mark & Tom Lombardo and their staff.
President Walt Bentson & Greg Digirolamo greeted the participants at the registration table, and all indulged in a neatly prepared continental breakfast. All were given a gift of a BPL cap with the Boston B in the front and the league’s first year of 1929 in the back. A lot of camaraderie and banter were heard throughout the day. We all returned to the dining room after playing 18 holes, and were served the “U.S. Open” buffet. Prizes were given to the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place finishers, along with the longest drive and closest to the pin (listed below).
The day concluded with our popular raffle, ably conducted by Greg & Walt B. Prizes included jackets, jerseys, golf equipment, free rounds of golf at the ECC, a Red Sox game jersey #5 signed by Jonny Gomes, and Red Sox game tickets, including 4 monster seats. We thank the Red Sox Foundation, Grossman Marketing, Rich Clegg, and Walt Bentson for their very generous contributions to the raffle. A wonderful day was had by all, and left with the intention of returning for next years tournament.
On a very sad note, it was announced by Walt Mortimer that Park League Hall of Fame Umpire Jim McNally, who was scheduled to join us with his son Jimmy, died 5 days prior to the tournament in a roofing accident in Sandwich, Ma. One of the all time great umpires in Park League history, Jim will be missed by the entire baseball community, from Boston to the tip of Cape Cod. Our sincere condolences to his wife Joanne, son Jimmy, daughter Jennifer, the grandchildren, family, and friends.
